It's been a month now...

Well, it's been about a whole month now since mom went from a healthy 61 year old to almost dying. She's come so far in such a little amount of time!! My son and I went up to visit her yesterday for a few hours - we wanted to go for a few days, but they were calling for snow today. It was a great visit and she's doing so much better since I saw her 2 weeks ago. He helped her do some of her therapy exercises and worked on typing with her on her laptop. It's hard for her to type, since she doesn't have much feeling at all in the fingers of her right hand. She has a heavy finger on the "K" key, which provided lots of laughs for them.

A few things that are going on... She gets to skip dialysis on Monday (yay!!) again, her kidney's are doing a really good job right now. Mom did end up getting a transfusion of blood on Friday, because she was showing symptoms of having low hemoglobin. She said it was like being a narcoleptic, she'd fall asleep in the middle of a sentence while she was talking. Her PT and OT are going really well and she's loving all of it. She says her body "sings" when she's able to get more active and moving around again.

On the not so good side of things, her pain has changed from intense pressure in her feet to sharp shooting/crawling pain in them. I think this means she's getting blood-flow back in them. I imagine it's like having your feet fall asleep and "wake up" x100000 or so. They've put her on Gabapentin to help control that new pain... It's the same med they give folks who have shingles to help with nerve pain.

This morning, she was able to completely dress herself without any help from the nurses. She walked with her walker down to the lunchroom and was able to sit in a regular chair to eat lunch. They're having her do steps in PT and she's doing an amazing job. Overall, still really great news and huge improvements. Here's a shot of my drama mama and me. Love her!
